"Tonsina Cabin"
The Tonsina Cabin in Seward, Alaska, is one of my favorite go-to spots for last-minute adventures. The hike in is just a couple of miles, winding through lush forest, across creeks, and over floodplains—but don’t let the short distance fool you. Checking the tide charts is essential. Alaska boasts some of the highest tidal swings in the world, often ranging from 8 to 12 feet. At high tide, sections of the trail can become completely submerged, turning an easy walk into an impassable route—even well inland from the shoreline—sometimes forcing long waits for the tide to recede. Timing your journey just right is the key to reaching this beautiful cabin, where stunning views and incredible hiking trails await.
